What happens when the AI doesn't know the answer?

In short

The most important quality of a good AI phone assistant isn't what it knows, but what it doesn't try to guess. Echo answers only from its own knowledge base, and if a question goes beyond it, it doesn't improvise: it hands the call over, or records the caller's name and number and notifies you right away. So the caller always gets accurate information, or a person who calls them back.

A legitimate concern about AI is that it states falsehoods with confidence. For a receptionist this is especially dangerous: wrong business hours or a made-up price can cost more than the unanswered call. That's why restraint is Echo's ground rule.

It answers only from the knowledge base

Echo knows what you gave it during onboarding: business hours, prices, services, frequently asked questions. It answers these accurately. What it has no data on, it doesn't talk about, and it doesn't guess either. This isn't a limitation, it's a guarantee: the caller never gets information from it that didn't come from you.

If a question goes beyond it

When someone asks something it has no answer to, it can do one of two things, depending on your settings. Either it hands the call over live to you or a colleague, or it records the caller's name, number, and question and notifies you right away so you can call back. In both cases the caller knows they're being taken care of, not running into a dead end.

Handling urgent cases separately

You can set Echo to treat certain situations as urgent, such as a burst pipe or a health question. In these cases it doesn't wait for the daily summary: it hands the call over to the number you specified right away, or sends an instant notification so you can decide on the next step.

Why does this matter to you?

The goal isn't for Echo to know everything from day one. The goal is for it to say accurately what it knows, and to honestly hand over what it doesn't. For a receptionist, this is the foundation of reliability.

Related questions

Could Echo give someone wrong information?

It answers accurately from its knowledge base, and outside of that it doesn't talk: it hands over or records. It doesn't make up data, so the risk of misinformation is minimal. In the first weeks of fine-tuning, we refine its answers based on real calls.

How do I find out if it couldn't answer someone?

You get an email summary of every call, with the written transcript. If Echo logged an unanswered question, you see that too, along with the contact details, so you can call back.

Can I set what counts as urgent?

Yes. During onboarding you specify the situations in which it should hand over live right away or send an instant notification. Everything else goes into the daily summary.
